6:15am
The alarm rings. I kiss my wife Elizabeth, hit the snooze bar once, and steal ten more minutes of sleep. When the alarm sounds again, I am up and having Eggo waffles and yogurt with my son before heading to BART.
7:30am
Onboard the train, I summarize findings for a client based on 12 in-depth interviews, scan the Wall Street Journal and answer e-mail. I type up objectives for a client meeting later today. Between the station and the office, I call a buddy and coach him through a big job change decision. I confirm dinner plans with a friend in New York - the part of the world I'm from and where I'll be next week.
8:45am
Shani, Alia, Hilary and I jump on a call to brainstorm activities for upcoming client leadership offsites in London. We're helping C-level executives in Europe to lead a full organizational transformation to build and deliver techology solutions instead of individual products and services. Working across borders on framing and launching new business and operating models across functions or entire organizations and the associated capability building and culture change is core Trium Work.
9:30am
Internal Operations meeting. I join Jeremy, Penny, Rich and John to discuss our new-hire onboarding process and review a set of management reports. We discuss how the Operations team is working to address day-to-day issues as well as the larger challenges of scaling our business. As we work, we share personal anecdotes and identify some best practices to share with the rest of the Operations Team.
10:30am
Stephanie and I refine the detailed design we created for an upcoming executive offsite with a major biotech client. The design indicates how we will facilitate some frictional conversations among the leadership team to help them align on a strategy and inspire their teams to work differently. The client is a leader in cancer research, which makes us feel proud and connected to the work.
12 noon
Off to lunch at Bocadillos, an eclectic tapas restaurant, with Monica. At Trium my colleagues feel like friends and family, and over lunch we chat about local music, recent movies, global politics, even the social customs in Finland.
1pm
I call a prospective client to schedule a business development meeting for later in the week. Then I touch base with Andrew and we structure objectives for the meeting. One thing I appreciate about Andrew is his strength in articulating Trium's vision and inspiring interest in what we do.
1:30pm
On the way to the conference room to interview a candidate, I run into Matthew, who shares my interest in wine - a passion I acquired when I moved to the Bay Area. He promises to e-mail me his latest discovery for a dinner party Elizabeth and I are hosting next weekend. The senior consultant candiate and I exchange ideas and background stories. I love interviewing candidates because I get a chance to help build our team while reminding myself of all the great reasons I came to Trium.
2pm
Time to prepare for tomorrow's three-hour client working session. My project team and I define desired outcomes and explore ways to make the experience both productive and fun. John coaches me on my delivery, sharing his stage direction expertise to make sure that my delivery brings the content to life.
6pm
I head next door to the bar at 15 Romolo for drinks and development conversations with Hilary. I am Hilary's development advisor, but we end up sharing our personal and professional goals and exploring ways to reach them. I always leave these conversations hoping Hilary learns as much from me as I do from her.
7pm
Walking to the train, I call Alia to check in on how life is treating her as she works late on a client site. We end up recounting an episode from the movie "Office Space," laughing about how glad we are that Trium bares no resemblance. Off the train, I hit the gym to do some running, lift weights and head home for dinner, where Elizabeth and I catch up while feeding our son. We give each other advice about how to handle challenges that come up for us at work and we plan a scuba driving vacation in Asia.
11pm
Before bed, I email a New York friend a happy birthday wish so he will have it in the morning; I'll call him first thing to do it live. I check out what music artists are coming to the Bay Area, clear out e-mail, and feel energized by quality of my life: home, friends, work. It's all good.
