7am
I'm already in the office, but it's not what you think. For some of us the day begins in the conference room, but we're not brainstorming around the table, we're greeting the sun from the floor. Trium is all about balance, so a group of us take yoga a few days a week in the office. After, we grab showers and breakfast and begin focusing on the day ahead.
9am
I begin the workday by checking voicemail and dealing with emails that came in overnight. Today a client and I are venue hunting for an upcoming two-day working offsite with his leadership team. We're considering a special ranch in Napa, far from the distractions of the daily grind, where participants can focus exclusively on the issues at hand.
9:15am
Jonathan's at the coffee maker and I grab his ear for 10 minutes to get clear on our priorities for the day.
9:30am
I create an organizational assessment survey for a client. One of many tools we use, the survey will inform an approach customized for the client while baselining where they stand today.
10:30am
The survey looks good, feels right and works perfectly. The final goes off to Jonathan for review.
11am
For our weekly CSC conference call the San Francisco team gathers in the conference/yoga room while New York participates by phone. We run through project updates, our capacity, new tools and better practices. Jill needs a hand and I volunteer to handle overflow; she'll email details. Most importantly, we connect real-time and renew our commitment: one team, 3,000 miles apart.
12 noon
Back at my desk, I set out to compile an output document from a client meeting that ended yesterday. There are 30 flipcharts, 30 giant pages of scribbles, boxes and lines capturing dialog, challenges, goals and results. It's like turning hieroglyphics into history on a deadline. My job is to translate these flipcharts into a cohesive PowerPoint presentation.
1pm
It's done, and I send the document off to Brad for review.
I sit down to lunch from Bocadillo on the Trium patio, relishing a moment in the sun with a view of the Pyramid. The moment's a sweet one.
1:30pm
Jonathan's sends back his comments on the survey and I make a few minor tweaks, upload it and send a link to invited participants reminding them to call me with questions or issues.
2pm
It's time for my afternoon touch-base with Jonathan. A client has called and needs impromptu support on an Executive Committee presentation he's giving tomorrow. We shift gears and rearrange our docket.
I clear Jonathan's calendar and pull together a few supporting slides for the presentation. I know the client, know the content and quickly create a few graphics to succinctly capture the message.
2:30pm
Once finished, I get back to a Participant Reality I started yesterday. This document, based on one-on-one interviews, presents a snapshot of what's going on in the client's overall business. I organize the findings and forward them to Clinton, who will surface themes, add clarifying details and polish the document for a client presentation next week.
3:45pm
I meet with Marie for a development conversation over coffee at a nearby cafe. We discuss my professional and personal goals and check in on my progress since I joined Trium. This is a thing I love about Trium: feedback is constructive, frequent and inspiring — and there's always good coffee around.
4:30pm
A new client project is kicking off and I create a project plan, familiarize myself with the players, and reach out to client-side team members who'll help manage logistics. I calendar time with Trium team members for interviews and design for the three months preceding the client offsite.
5:30pm
Before I leave for the day, I update my other project plans and finalize that deliverable for Jill. My last step is to review today's to-do list and create one for tomorrow.
6:00pm
On my way home to the Haight, I spy Golden Gate Park out the window of the bus and decide to grab a quick run before a house meeting over dinner with my six roommates. Yes, that's right:six.
